Unlocking Financial Inclusion: Our First Impact Loan with Whole Planet Foundation

Nairobi, December 2018

In 2018, Bidhaa Sasa reached a pivotal milestone by securing our first impact loan from the Whole Planet Foundation (WPF). This partnership provided essential working capital, enabling us to extend our reach to nearly 5,000 new borrowers in rural Kenya. The loan facilitated the distribution of affordable, life-enhancing products—such as solar lamps, efficient cookstoves, and maize drying tarps—to communities often overlooked by traditional financial services.

WPF’s support was not just financial; it was an endorsement of our client-centric approach. They recognized our commitment to affordable credit, responsive customer service, and robust internal systems. Our model emphasizes human interaction, leveraging social networks and group cohesion methodologies over high-tech solutions. This approach fosters trust and ensures that our services are tailored to the unique needs of our clients.

A testament to our model’s effectiveness is the story of Humphrey, a repeat customer and group leader. He utilised loans from Bidhaa Sasa to acquire an efficient stove, a gas cooker, and a canvas tarp for drying maize. As a group leader, Humphrey plays a crucial role in liaising between our field staff and clients, providing information, demonstrating products, and motivating group members. His proactive engagement exemplifies the community-driven spirit that underpins our operations.

This initial impact loan from WPF was more than just funding; it was a catalyst that validated our mission and propelled us towards greater financial inclusion for rural communities.
